The port of Kerch guarded access to the Sea of Azov, an important supply route for Sebastopol. Much to the disgust of the British, a previous Anglo-French expedition to capture Kerch had been abandoned in sight of its objective when the French force was suddenly recalled. However, on 22 May 1855 a second expedition was launched which was successful, opening up the way into the Sea of Azov and destroying the Russian naval squadron there. The artist, William Simpson, was permitted by Lord Raglan to accompany both expeditions.

. This print captures a pivotal moment in history during the Crimean War. The lithograph depicts the daring expedition to capture Kerch, an important port guarding access to the Sea of Azov. The British had been left disappointed by a previous failed attempt when their French allies were abruptly recalled. However, on May 22nd, 1855, a second expedition was launched with great success. The image showcases the intense action as troops disembark from their ships onto Kamish Bournou's shores. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation and determination as soldiers prepare for battle against Russian forces occupying St. Pauls BatteryA. Rendered in vivid colors by artist E Walker after William Simpson's original work, this lithograph brings to life the bravery and resilience exhibited by these soldiers during this significant campaign. Accompanying Lord Raglan on both expeditions, Simpson himself witnessed these historic events firsthand and skillfully captured them in his artwork.
