EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print showcases the iconic Crystal Palace in Sydenham, circa 1862. The colour lithograph by Achille-Louis Martinet takes us back to a time when this architectural marvel stood tall and proud. Originally built for the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park of 1851, this magnificent structure was later dismantled and moved after the close of the exposition in 1854. The Crystal Palace, also known as Palais de Cristal, became a symbol of Victorian grandeur and innovation. Its intricate design featured fountains that added an enchanting touch to its already breathtaking architecture. This image captures one such fountain amidst lush greenery, evoking a sense of pleasure and leisure. Sadly, despite its popularity among visitors from all walks of life, the Crystal Palace met its demise in 1941 when it was tragically demolished. However, through this print preserved in private collection by The Stapleton Collection, we can still appreciate its splendor today. Joseph Paxton's visionary creation continues to inspire awe even long after its physical existence came to an end. As we gaze upon this image from Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, we are transported back to a time when dreams were made tangible through extraordinary feats of architecture like the Crystal Palace.
