Battle of Austerlitz, 2 December, 1805, (c1835). Artist: Francois Georgin

Battle of Austerlitz, 2 December, 1805, (c1835). Regarded as Napoleon Bonapartes greatest victory, Austerlitz was a sublime trap that destroyed the armies of his enemies Russia and Austria. Tricking his opponents into thinking he was weaker than he actually was, and then calling in nearby reinforcements. The French emperor deliberately abandoned a strong central position on the Pratzen Heights and left his right flank weak. The Allies eagerly moved forward to occupy the heights and then weakened the centre to crush the French right. As the bulk of Austrian and Russian troops attacked, Marshal Davouts III Corp arrived to bolster the French line. After much hard fighting the French crushed the Allies. Thousands of fleeing troops drowned when a frozen lake split under the weight of men and guns. French losses amounted to 8000 while the Russian and Austrian emperors, present at the battle, saw more than 27, 000 men killed, wounded and captured. Bonaparte also captured 180 cannon

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intensity and strategic brilliance of the Battle of Austerlitz, one of Napoleon Bonaparte's greatest victories. Painted by Francois Georgin in approximately 1835, this artwork depicts the pivotal moment when Napoleon outwitted his enemies, Russia and Austria. Austerlitz was a masterful trap set by Napoleon to deceive his opponents into underestimating his strength. By deliberately abandoning a strong central position on the Pratzen Heights and leaving his right flank weak, he lured the Allies into occupying the heights and weakening their center. Little did they know that nearby reinforcements were being called in. As Austrian and Russian troops eagerly attacked, Marshal Davout's III Corp arrived just in time to bolster the French line. The ensuing battle was fierce and relentless, but ultimately resulted in a crushing defeat for the Allies. Tragically, as thousands of fleeing troops attempted to escape across a frozen lake, it split under their weight causing many to drown alongside their weapons. The casualties were staggering; while French losses amounted to 8,000 men, both Russian and Austrian emperors witnessed over 27,000 killed or captured soldiers from their armies alone. Additionally, Napoleon seized an impressive haul of 180 cannons during this monumental triumph. Francois Georgin's artistic rendition brings this historic event back to life with vivid detail and emotion. It serves as a powerful reminder of Napoleon Bonaparte's military genius and showcases how even against overwhelming odds he could emerge victorious on the battlefield.
