English ships blockaded the Dutch Republic's harbours in 1653. While leading an attempt to break the blockade, the Dutch admiral Maarten Tromp was killed. His family commissioned this painting of his final battle to commemorate his death. It still has its original frame, featuring the heraldic arms of the Tromp family

This stunning 17th century oil painting, titled "The Battle of Terheide" or "The Battle of Terheide, 10 August 1653," is a poignant commemoration of a significant episode from the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-54). The Dutch Republic, whose harbors were relentlessly blockaded by the English, was attempting to break free from the stifling grip of the English fleet. Leading this valiant effort was the esteemed Dutch admiral, Maarten Tromp. In the painting, we witness the fierce engagement between the two naval forces, with Dutch ships battling against their English counterparts.
