The Civil War in America: Federals advancing on the abandoned Confederate positions... 1862. Creator: Unknown

The Civil War in America: Federals advancing on the abandoned Confederate positions at Centreville - from a sketch by our special artist, 1862. On the 10th March the advance of the Federal forces on Centreville and Manassas took place - the subject of the Engraving...being the approach of the Union column to the abandoned Confederate works on Centreville heights. Beyond is seen the smoke from one of the numerous burning camps destroyed by the Secessionists on evacuating the positions. Many of the "guns" in the forts were dummies, being nothing more that huge painted logs placed there as substitutes for the guns which the Confederates had been gradually removing for the previous month. The town of Centreville, at least the cluster of half-ruined shanties that compose it, is over the brow of the hill, and Manassas lies seven miles further on'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment during the American Civil War when Federals advanced upon the abandoned Confederate positions at Centreville, Virginia, in March 1862. The scene unfolds before us as a column of Union soldiers marches forward, their determined expressions etched upon their faces, towards the deserted Confederate works on Centreville Heights. In the distance, beyond the crest of a hill, the smoky remnants of Centreville can be seen, with Manassas lying seven miles further on. The Confederate forces had evacuated the area, leaving behind a landscape dotted with the charred remains of their camps. Many of the guns in the forts were discovered to be dummies, mere painted logs disguising the absence of the real artillery that had been gradually removed in the preceding month. The Union soldiers advance with caution, aware that the enemy could still be lurking nearby, ready to launch a counterattack. This powerful image, created by an unknown artist for the Illustrated London News in 1862, offers a glimpse into the raw reality of the American Civil War. The scene is one of tension and uncertainty, as the outcome of the conflict remained uncertain, and both sides continued to engage in a brutal and protracted struggle for control of the nation.
