EDITORS COMMENTS
Coronation Day, 12 May 1937: A Historic Moment in the Life of Princess Elizabeth This photograph captures a poignant moment during the coronation of King George VI on 12 May 1937, at Westminster Abbey in London. The young Princess Elizabeth, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II, stands proudly as the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal of England, receives her. The Duke, dressed in full regalia, bows before the princess, signifying the formal recognition of her position as the heir presumptive to the British throne. The Duke of Norfolk, Bernard Marmaduke Fitzalan-Howard (1892-1974), was an essential figure in the coronation ceremony. As the Earl Marshal, he was responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the event. The Duke wears the traditional robes and ermine trim, adding to the grandeur of the occasion. Princess Elizabeth, dressed in a white satin gown and wearing the Imperial State Crown, looks confident and composed. The future monarch is accompanied by her sister, Princess Margaret, and two pages, one of whom is a footman and the other a postilion. The girls wear elegant dresses and are adorned with sashes and badges, adding a touch of colour to the otherwise monochrome scene. The photograph is taken from the book 'Princess Elizabeth: The Illustrated Story of Twenty-one Years in the Life of the Heir Presumptive' by Dermot Morrah, published by Odhams Press Limited in 1947. The image offers a glimpse into the pageantry and grandeur of the coronation, a significant event in British history.
