Effigies of Richard I and Berengaria, from the tomb at Fontevrault Abbet, France

Effigies of King Richard I and Berengaria, from the tomb at Fontevrault Abbey, France. Richard (1157-1199) was King of England from 1189 to 1199. He was known as Richard the Lionheart, or C?ur de Lion, even before his accession because of his military reputation. He spent little of his reign in England, setting out on the Third Crusade in 1190, and from 1194 onwards fighting to regain territories in France. He remains one of the very few Kings of England remembered by reputation, not number. Berengaria (c1164-1230), Queen consort to Richard, has the distinction of being the only Queen of England never to set foot on English soil. From Cassells Illustrated History of England

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the effigies of King Richard I and Queen Berengaria, taken from their tomb at Fontevrault Abbey in France. King Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart or Cœur de Lion, ruled England from 1189 to 1199. Renowned for his military prowess even before becoming king, he spent little time in England during his reign. Instead, he embarked on the Third Crusade in 1190 and fought to reclaim territories in France from 1194 onwards. Despite his limited presence within England itself, Richard's reputation as a formidable leader has endured throughout history. Queen Berengaria, consort to King Richard I, holds a unique distinction among English queens—she never set foot on English soil. Hailing from Spain (specifically Navarre), she married Richard but was unable to join him in his kingdom due to various circumstances. The intricately carved effigies depicted here pay homage to their royal status and religious significance. This remarkable image transports us back through time into the grandeur of medieval Europe—a testament to the enduring legacy of these monarchs who shaped both English and European history. Preserved within this mausoleum at Fontevrault Abbey, these effigies serve as a powerful reminder of the rich cultural heritage that spans across countries and centuries.
