An Egyptian sakieh, or ox-driven bucket pump, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood

An Egyptian sakieh, or ox-driven bucket pump, Egypt, 1905. This machine, known as a sakieh, is familiar to us, in a less primitive form, as the bucket- or chain-pump. A wheel which you see out yonder next to the river, as it revolves over the water, carries an endless band of palm rope, which hangs in a loop in the waters beneath the wheel. Distributed at intervals along this band are carthern jars, which, at the wheel revolves and the band moves, are carried down into the water, filled and continually raised to the top. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to Egypt in 1905, showcasing an ancient water pumping system known as the Egyptian sakieh. The image, captured by Underwood & Underwood, transports us to a time when oxen were harnessed to drive this remarkable contraption. In the foreground of the photo stands a man, his presence emphasizing the scale of this impressive machine. Behind him looms a large wheel that rotates over the river's edge. Attached to it is an endless band made of palm rope, forming a loop that dips into the water below. Along this band hang carthern jars at regular intervals. As the wheel turns and moves along its course, these jars are submerged into the river and filled with water before being lifted upward continuously. This ingenious mechanism allows for efficient irrigation or extraction of water from wells. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and authenticity to this snapshot from history. It serves as a reminder of how humans have always sought innovative solutions for their daily needs. This stereoscopic card is part of a series called "Egypt Through the Stereoscope" accompanied by insightful text written by James H Breasted. As we gaze upon this image today, we can appreciate not only its historical significance but also marvel at human ingenuity throughout centuries past.
