First meeting of George III with the Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg Strelitz, 1761, (mid 19th century). King George III of Great Britain (1738-1820) succeeded to the throne when his grandfather, George II, died suddenly on 25 October 1760. The search for an appropriate wife intensified. On 8 September 1761 in the Chapel Royal, St Jamess Palace, the King married Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), whom he met on their wedding day. This print captures a significant moment in British history - the first meeting of King George III with Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1761. Following the sudden death of his grandfather, George II, King George III ascended to the throne at a young age. The search for a suitable wife became crucial, and on 8 September 1761, he married Princess Charlotte. The image showcases the grandeur of their wedding day at St James's Palace's Chapel Royal. It is an engraving created by John Tallis & Company in London and New York during the mid-19th century. The couple's coronation took place two weeks later at Westminster Abbey. Princess Charlotte, born in Germany as Sophia Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, was only introduced to her future husband on their wedding day itself. Despite this unconventional start to their relationship, they went on to have a successful marriage that lasted until King George III's death in 1820.
