EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in British history - the first meeting of King George III with Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1761. Following the sudden death of his grandfather, George II, King George III ascended to the throne at a young age. The search for a suitable wife became crucial, and on 8 September 1761, he married Princess Charlotte. The image showcases the grandeur of their wedding day at St James's Palace's Chapel Royal. It is an engraving created by John Tallis & Company in London and New York during the mid-19th century. The couple's coronation took place two weeks later at Westminster Abbey. Princess Charlotte, born in Germany as Sophia Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, was only introduced to her future husband on their wedding day itself. Despite this unconventional start to their relationship, they went on to have a successful marriage that lasted until King George III's death in 1820. This photograph offers us a glimpse into this historical event and allows us to appreciate the elegance and regality surrounding it. It symbolizes not only the union between two individuals but also represents an important chapter in British monarchy history.
