The Great Eastern, 1860: The Vessel leaving Southampton on her First Voyage, June 17, (1901)

The Great Eastern, 1860: The Vessel leaving Southampton on her First Voyage, June 17, (1901). The SS Great Eastern was an iron sailing steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel with John Scott Russell, the largest vessel afloat until she was broken up in 1888. Following earlier unsuccessful attempts, the Great Eastern successfully laid a transatlantic communications cable across the Atlantic in 1866. The use of cable to relay telegraph messages reduced communication times from the length of a sea voyage to a few seconds. From " The Illustrated London News Record of the Glorious Reign of Queen Victoria 1837-1901: The Life and Accession of King Edward VII. and the Life of Queen Alexandra". [London, 1901]

The Great Eastern, 1860 - The Vessel leaving Southampton on her First Voyage, June 17, (1901)

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the historic moment when the SS Great Eastern embarked on her maiden voyage from Southampton in 1860. Designed by the brilliant minds of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and John Scott Russell, this iron sailing steamship was a true marvel of its time. In fact, it held the title of being the largest vessel afloat until its dismantling in 1888. However, what truly set the Great Eastern apart was its groundbreaking achievement in transatlantic communication. After previous unsuccessful attempts, this magnificent ship successfully laid a transatlantic communications cable across the Atlantic Ocean in 1866. This revolutionary use of cable allowed for near-instantaneous telegraph messages to be relayed between continents, drastically reducing communication times from weeks to mere seconds. The significance of this technological feat cannot be overstated. It marked a turning point in global connectivity and forever changed how we communicate over long distances. The image itself is taken from "The Illustrated London News Record of the Glorious Reign of Queen Victoria" published in 1901 and showcases the grandeur and power exuded by this remarkable vessel. As we gaze upon this black-and-white photograph today, we are reminded not only of our progress but also of those visionary individuals who paved the way for our modern world through their ingenuity and determination.
