A Group of the Shore Party at the Winter Quarters, c1908, (1909)

A Group of the Shore Party at the Winter Quarters. [Standing (from left): Joyce, Day, Wild, Adams, Brocklehurst, Shackleton, Marshall, David, Armitage, Marston. Sitting: Priestley, Murray, Roberts], c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a group of brave explorers known as the Shore Party at their Winter Quarters in c1908. Led by the legendary Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton, this daring team made history during their second Antarctic expedition from 1907 to 1909. The photograph showcases the camaraderie and resilience of these men who faced extreme cold and challenging conditions. Standing proudly from left to right are Joyce, Day, Wild, Adams, Brocklehurst, Shackleton himself, Marshall, David, Armitage, and Marston. Sitting in front are Priestley, Murray, and Roberts. Each member played a crucial role in achieving remarkable feats during this expedition. Shackleton's team achieved an unprecedented record by reaching Farthest South latitude at 88° S - a mere 97 geographical miles away from the elusive South Pole. Additionally, they conquered Mount Erebus; braving its volcanic activity to explore its icy slopes. Ernest Shackleton's contributions were so significant that he was knighted by King Edward VII for his achievements on this expedition. Tragically though, Shackleton met his untimely demise during his third oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition at just 47 years old. This powerful image is taken from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I - an account written by E. H. Shackleton himself about this extraordinary journey into uncharted territories. It serves as a testament to human determination and exploration spirit that continues to inspire generations today.
