Home from Sea, 1856-1863. Creator: Arthur Hughes

Home from Sea, 1856-1863. This work was originally exhibited as The Mothers Grave : a boy in sailors uniform weeps over the grave of his mother who has died while he was at sea. Details such as spiders webs, dew drops, dog roses and dandelion seeds emphasise the theme of lifes transience. The mothers death is also echoed in the lamb separated from its mother by the barrier of the tombstone. The artists wife, Tryphena, sat for the figure of the boys sister; the scene is the churchyard at Chingford in Essex. Painting in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. From " Pre-Raphaelite Painters" by Robin Ironside, with a descriptive catalogue by John Gere. [The Phaidon Press Ltd, London, 1948]

Home from Sea, 1856-1863 - A Poignant Reflection on Life's Transience

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print by Arthur Hughes, titled "Home from Sea" we are transported to a churchyard in Chingford, Essex. The scene depicts a young boy dressed in a sailor's uniform, overcome with grief as he weeps over his mother's grave. The artist skillfully captures the ephemeral nature of life through intricate details such as delicate spider webs, glistening dew drops, dog roses in bloom, and dandelion seeds floating in the air. The theme of transience is further emphasized by the presence of a lamb separated from its mother by the barrier of the tombstone. This poignant symbol mirrors the boy's own bereavement and adds an additional layer of sorrow to the composition. Notably, Hughes' wife Tryphena served as inspiration for the figure portraying the boy's sister. Her inclusion adds a personal touch to this heartfelt portrayal of loss and mourning within a family unit. Through his meticulous brushwork and attention to detail, Hughes invites us into this somber moment frozen in time. As viewers, we cannot help but be moved by the raw emotion conveyed through every stroke of paint. This powerful painting serves as a testament to Hughes' mastery within the Pre-Raphaelite artistic style while also reminding us of our own mortality and fragility in this ever-changing world.
