Launch of the "Dragon-Fly" Steamer on Lake Windermere, 1850. Creator: Smyth. Launch of the "Dragon-Fly" Steamer on Lake Windermere, 1850. Creator: Smyth

Launch of the "Dragon-Fly" Steamer on Lake Windermere, 1850....another vessel, built for the Windermere Iron Steamer Company, was launched at Low Wood, Windermere. Its dimensions are 100 feet in length, 14 feet beam, 50 horse-power, and a very light draught of water, not more than 20 inches. The vessel was launched complete in every respect, and with steam up; so that the moment she reached the water, the engines being started, she immediately steamed around the beautiful bay of Low Wood, amidst the cheers of the spectators. This new steamer was built by Messrs. M'Conochie and Claude, engineers, Liverpool, and was christened the Dragon-fly by Mrs. Rigg, the lady of the Secretary of the Company. After the launch, a large party sat down to an excellent dinner, at Mr. Logan's, Low Wood Hotel. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Witnessing the Exciting Launch of the Dragon-Fly Steamer on Lake Windermere, 1850, as Depicted in a Stunning Smyth Print In the heart of the English Lake District, at the picturesque Low Wood Bay on Lake Windermere, an extraordinary event unfolded in 1850. The launch of another vessel, built for the esteemed Windermere Iron Steamer Company, was about to take place. This new marvel of engineering, measuring 100 feet in length, 14 feet in beam, and boasting a powerful 50 horse-power engine, was a sight to behold. The Dragon-Fly steamer, constructed by the skilled hands of Messrs. M'Conochie and Claude, engineers from Liverpool, was a testament to the industrial innovation of the Victorian era. Its light draught of water, not exceeding 20 inches, allowed it to navigate the lake's shallow waters with ease. The momentous day arrived, and the Dragon-Fly was launched in grand style. Completely outfitted and with steam already up, the vessel glided effortlessly into the water. The engines roared to life, and the Dragon-Fly steamed gracefully around the serene Low Wood Bay, eliciting cheers from the captivated spectators. Mrs. Rigg, the gracious wife of the Windermere Iron Steamer Company's Secretary, christened the new steamer as 'Dragon-Fly.' Following the launch, a lavish dinner was held at Mr. Logan's Low Wood Hotel, where guests savored the delicious fare and celebrated this remarkable achievement in transportation history.
