Marriage of Sir Robert Peel and Lady Emily Hay - The Dejeuner in the Waterloo Gallery at Apsley Hous Creator: Unknown

Marriage of Sir Robert Peel and Lady Emily Hay - The Dejeuner in the Waterloo Gallery at Apsley House, [London], 1856. The table, which was a miracle of ornamental decoration, extended from end to end of the gallery; and at each extremity rose...ornamented with garlands of flowers, the two gigantic candelabra of Russian porphyry...In the middle of the table was the celebrated Portuguese plateau, extending, in solid silver, five-and-twenty feet. From the centre...rose the elegant Wedding Cake...Orange-trees, bearing ripe fruit and blossoms, shed their odours upon the table...The famous Dresden vases were filled with choice camellias, Indian azaleas, lilies of the valley, and hyacinths in full bloom and fragrance...the flowers...were furnished by Mr. James Veitch, jun. of the King's-road Nursery, the credit of their tasteful arrangement being due to Mr. Harding, of Clifford-street'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grandeur and elegance of the Marriage of Sir Robert Peel and Lady Emily Hay - The Dejeuner, an event held in the Waterloo Gallery at Apsley House in London in 1856. The table, which stretches from one end of the gallery to the other, is a marvel of ornamental decoration. At each end, ornamented with garlands of flowers, rise the two gigantic candelabra of Russian porphyry. In the middle of the table stands the celebrated Portuguese plateau, a solid silver expanse that extends five-and-twenty feet. From the center rises the elegant Wedding Cake, adorned with intricate designs and cascading tiers. Orange trees, bearing ripe fruit and blossoms, line the table, their fragrant scent filling the room. The famous Dresden vases are filled with choice camellias, Indian azaleas, lilies of the valley, and hyacinths in full bloom and fragrance. The flowers, a credit to the tasteful arrangement of Mr. Harding of Clifford-street, are furnished by Mr. James Veitch, jun. of the King's-road Nursery. The Marriage of Sir Robert Peel and Lady Emily Hay was a grand affair, attended by the elite of London society. The Waterloo Gallery at Apsley House, with its stunning decor and exquisite floral arrangements, provided the perfect backdrop for this memorable occasion. This photograph offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of Victorian-era society, a time when such extravagant displays were the norm for celebrating important milestones in life.
