Monte Cavallo - Rome, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Monte Cavallo - Rome, 1850. The Piazza di Monte Cavallo...with the Quirinal Palace on the right...occupies the crest of the Quirinal Hill, and is so called from the celebrated groups of "the men and horses"...which stand on each side of the Egyptian obelisk, and close to the fountain...All three form most conspicuous objects of decoration in the open elevated place...and are a portion of the treasures which have rewarded the trouble of excavation...The horses and their riders were found in the year 1589, amongst the ruins of the Baths of Constantine, within a short distance of their present position, where they were planted bv Pope Sixtus V. They are said to be the work of the celebrated Grecian sculptors Phidias and Praxiteles, and to have been brought to Rome by Constantine the Great from Alexandria, in which city they had stood for several centuries previously'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Monte Cavallo in Rome, 1850: A Glimpse into the Past This photograph, taken in 1850, showcases the stunning Piazza di Monte Cavallo in Rome, Italy. The image transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of this ancient city. The Quirinal Palace, a grand architectural masterpiece, graces the right side of the square, nestled atop the Quirinal Hill. The piazza, named after the famous groups of the Dioscuri or Castor and Pollux, is home to an Egyptian obelisk and a magnificent fountain. These decorative elements, which include the horses and their riders, are believed to be the work of renowned Greek sculptors Phidias and Praxiteles, and were discovered in Rome in 1589. The obelisk, a treasured relic, was originally brought to Rome by Emperor Constantine the Great from Alexandria, Egypt, where it had stood for centuries. The horses and their riders, believed to be the Dioscuri, were found nearby, within the ruins of the Baths of Constantine. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the Victorian era's fascination with Rome's history and art. The image captures the essence of the open, elevated place, which remains a popular tourist attraction and a testament to the city's enduring allure.
