EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases the intricately detailed pediment of the Great Western Royal Hotel in Paddington, London, as it appeared in 1854. The image was published in the Illustrated London News, showcasing the sculptural enrichments of this magnificent building that stood proudly at the Paddington terminus of the Great Western Railway. The pediment, designed by architect Philip Charles Hardwick, boasts a sumptuous neoclassical style reminiscent of the age of Louis XIV or later. The sculptural enrichments, including the colossal terminal figures supporting the balcony, were the work of renowned sculptor John Thomas. The pediment is filled with allegorical figures, each representing a concept of Abundance: Peace, Plenty, Industry, and Science. These figures are cleverly modeled and grouped, adding to the high reputation of the sculptor. The Peace figure holds an olive branch and wears a crown of laurel leaves, while Plenty is depicted with a cornucopia overflowing with fruit and vegetables. Industry is shown as a woman with a hammer and anvil, and Science is represented as a woman holding a compass and a book. The pediment also features other decorative elements, such as an American Indian and an elephant, adding to the overall artistic richness of the building. The neoclassical design, with its elegant lines and allegorical figures, perfectly complemented the grandeur of the railway terminus and the hotel, making it a landmark of the era.
