Ramsgate Harbour, 1850. Creator: Edmund Evans

Ramsgate Harbour, [Kent], 1850. Early in the present century, a stone lighthouse was erected on the west pier...The harbour includes an area of forty-eight acres, and furnishes a convenient shelter for vessels which are obliged by heavy gales to run from the Downs. It is provided with basin, and floodgates for scouring it from the drifted sand or mud....Another great work at Ramsgate is the Shipway, constructed in 1838-9, for the repair of damaged vessels. It was built according to the patent of Messrs. Morton...who furnished the iron-work and machinery...The group of fishing craft [in our illustration] is characteristically picturesque. In the distance is shown the lofty Lantern Tower of St. George's Church...to the right is the Mount Albion estate, where the mansion known as Albion House was, if we remember rightly, tenanted by her present Majesty when Princess Victoria'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

Ramsgate Harbour, Kent, 1850 - A Scene of Maritime Activity and Industrial Innovation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken by Edmund Evans in 1850, captures the bustling activity of Ramsgate Harbour in Kent, England. The harbour, which covers an area of forty-eight acres, was a vital shelter for vessels seeking refuge from the harsh conditions of the North Sea. In the early 19th century, a stone lighthouse was erected on the west pier to guide ships safely into the harbour. The harbour was also equipped with a basin and floodgates to scour it from the drifted sand or mud. Another significant addition to the harbour was the Shipway, constructed in 1838-9, for the repair of damaged vessels. The iron-work and machinery for this innovative repair facility were supplied by Messrs. Morton. The photograph showcases a group of fishing craft, which adds to the picturesque scene. In the distance, the lofty Lantern Tower of St. George's Church can be seen, while to the right lies the Mount Albion estate, where Albion House, tenanted by Princess Victoria at the time, stood. The harbour was a hub of maritime activity, with boats of all shapes and sizes dotting the quayside. The men, dressed in traditional fisherman's garb, can be seen mending their nets or loading their catches onto the boats. The sailboats, with their sails billowing in the wind, add to the sense of movement and energy that pervades the scene. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the past, revealing the importance of Ramsgate Harbour as a vital transportation hub during the Victorian era. The photograph's timeless quality and intricate details make it a valuable addition to any collection of historical images.
