The Revolution in Sicily - Sicilian skirmishers attacking the advanced posts of the... 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Revolution in Sicily - Sicilian skirmishers attacking the advanced posts of the Neapolitans on the left flank at Melazzo - from a sketch by our special artist, 1860. The road, which at first sight seemed to be the most difficult point, proved easier than the rest, for there, at any rate, one could see the adversary and his movements. The only tactics possible under these circumstances were to push on the road...and, on the other hand, to make a bold push through the cover, unmindful of losses, to gain the rear of the enemy's position on the road. The heavy losses which such an unequal fight entailed on the attacking forces, as well as the necessity to encounter some flanking movement, which the enemy could easily execute without being seen, reduced very early the number of the reserve'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled 'The Revolution in Sicily - Sicilian skirmishers attacking the advanced posts of the Neapolitans on the left flank at Melazzo,' is a poignant reminder of the pivotal moment in Italian history known as the Expedition of the Thousand. The image, created by an unknown artist for the Illustrated London News in 1860, depicts Sicilian skirmishers boldly advancing towards the Neapolitan advanced posts. The scene unfolds on a dusty road, which initially appeared to be the most challenging terrain, but proved to be the easiest, as the adversary's movements could be observed. The only viable tactics under these circumstances were to press on the road and, simultaneously, to make a daring push through the cover, disregarding losses, to seize the enemy's position from the rear on the road. However, the heavy casualties incurred during this unequal fight and the imminent threat of enemy flanking maneuvers, which could be executed without detection, drastically reduced the size of the reserve forces. This engraving, filled with drama and tension, portrays the intense battle between the Sicilian and Neapolitan forces during the Battle of Milazzo or Melazzo. The lifelike depiction of soldiers firing their rifles, the hand gestures of commanders, and the dead bodies scattered on the ground, all contribute to the powerful narrative of this historic event. The Expedition of the Thousand, led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, was a turning point in the Italian Risorgimento, the movement for Italian unification, and this print offers a fascinating glimpse into the courage and determination of the soldiers involved in this pivotal moment in Italian history.
