Roman columns, 1889. Creator: W & AK Johnston
Roman columns, 1889. Examples of various types of column from classical buildings in Rome: 1. Corinthian, from the Temple of Mars Ultor; 2. Composite, from the Arch of Titus; 3. Ionic, from the Temple of Fortuna Virilis; 4. Doric, from the Theatre of Marcellus. In the Corinthian order, the capitals of the columns are decorated with acanthus leaves. The Composite order is a combination of Ionic and Corinthian capitals. The Ionic capital features a scroll-shaped ornament known as a volute, sometimes compared to rams horns. The Doric is the oldest and simplest of the classical orders and has a very plain capital. From the 9th edition of the " Encyclopaedia Britannica", 1889

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the timeless beauty of Roman columns, taken in 1889 by W & AK Johnston. The image presents a visual feast of various column types found in classical buildings across Rome. Each column represents a distinct order: the Corinthian from the Temple of Mars Ultor, the Composite from the Arch of Titus, the Ionic from the Temple of Fortuna Virilis, and finally, the Doric from the Theatre of Marcellus. The intricate details are highlighted as we delve into each order's unique characteristics. The Corinthian order boasts capitals adorned with delicate acanthus leaves, exuding elegance and sophistication. In contrast, the Composite order combines elements from both Ionic and Corinthian capitals to create a harmonious fusion. The Ionic capital stands out with its scroll-shaped volute ornament that has been likened to rams' horns—a striking feature that adds an artistic flair to any structure it adorns. On the other hand, simplicity reigns supreme in Doric columns—the oldest among these classical orders—displaying plain yet powerful capitals. This remarkable engraving is sourced from Britannica's 9th edition (1889), offering us a glimpse into ancient architectural wonders preserved through time. It serves as a testament to Rome's rich history and enduring influence on architectural design worldwide.
