Sebastopol and Balaclava shewing the position of the Allied Forces, 1854. Creator: John Dower

Sebastopol and Balaclava shewing the position of the Allied Forces, 1854. Crimean War. The severe and costly battles of Balaclava and Inkerman, and the approach of winter - which will necessarily delay, if not temporarily stop the active siege operations of the Allies - pointed out the necessity of putting the Camp of the latter into an efficient state of defence, by means of complete lines of circumvallation...The object of the two attacks was very different. That of Balaclava was to take the Allied armies in the rear, and cut off their communications with the sea at Balaclava...[The object of the Battle of Inkerman]...was not to take the Allies in the rear; but to attack and pound" them in their right flank - an operation which, if successfully carried out, would probably have ended in the rout and destruction of the whole Allied army'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled 'Sebastopol and Balaclava shewing the position of the Allied Forces,' is a testament to the pivotal moments of the Crimean War in 1854. Created by the skilled hand of John Dower, this detailed illustration provides an intriguing glimpse into the strategic positions of the Allied Forces during this tumultuous period. The map-like image showcases the layout of the Crimean Peninsula, with the besieged city of Sebastopol at its center. To the north, the Allied Forces, led by Lord Raglan, had established their camp at Balaclava. The image reveals the intricacies of their defensive lines, complete with circumvallation walls designed to protect against enemy attacks. The significance of the battles of Balaclava and Inkerman cannot be overstated during this time. The Battle of Balaclava aimed to take the Allied armies in the rear and sever their communications with the sea at Balaclava. Conversely, the Battle of Inkerman's objective was to attack and 'pound' the Allied forces in their right flank, a successful operation that could have potentially led to the rout and destruction of the entire Allied army. This illustration, originally published in the 'Illustrated London News' in 1854, offers a unique perspective into the complexities of the Crimean War and the strategic considerations of the Allied Forces during this critical period. The impending winter and the necessity of fortifying their camp underscore the urgency and importance of the situation. This piece of historical artistry continues to intrigue and inform us about a pivotal moment in world history.
