Tower of London - A Glimpse into History
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the early 20th century, capturing a mesmerizing view of the Tower of London. The image showcases St. Thomass Tower standing tall above the infamous Traitors Gate, both remnants from the reign of Henry III in the 11th century. The Tower of London, with its rich history as a palace, prison, fortress, and armoury, has witnessed countless stories unfold within its ancient walls. In this photograph, we can see part of the Inner Ward's twelve towers that were once used as prisons. Notably featured is the Bell Tower which served as a penitentiary for prominent figures such as Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I), Cardinal Fisher, and Sir Thomas More. It was within these very walls that Fisher and More met their tragic fate in 1535. As we gaze upon this postcard from Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. , we are transported to an era where communication relied on handwritten letters sent through postal services. This sepia-toned snapshot not only captures architectural beauty but also serves as a reminder of how crime and law shaped England's past. Immerse yourself in history with this remarkable print – an exquisite portrayal of one of Britain's most iconic landmarks steeped in medieval grandeur.
