EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the U.S.S. New York participating in a sack race during the anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1899. The U.S.S. New York, a cruiser and one of the key vessels in the United States Navy during the Spanish-American War, is shown here with its crew and other naval personnel engaged in the playful and unusual activity. The Battle of Santiago de Cuba was a significant naval engagement fought during the Spanish-American War, which marked the end of Spanish rule in Cuba and paved the way for American influence in the Caribbean. This photograph, taken as a dry plate glass negative of size 8 x 10 inches, was produced by an unknown photographer and is now part of the collections at the Library of Congress. The image offers a unique glimpse into the daily life and camaraderie of the sailors and marines serving aboard the U.S.S. New York during this historic period.
