Young Adelie and Parents, c1908, (1909)

Young Adelie and Parents, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Young Adelie and Parents, c1908" takes us back to the early 20th century, capturing a moment from one of Ernest Shackleton's expeditions to the Antarctic. This particular expedition, which took place between 1907 and 1909, marked a significant achievement in exploration history as Shackleton and his companions reached the Farthest South latitude at an impressive 88° S. Their courageous journey fell only 97 geographical miles short of reaching the elusive South Pole. In this remarkable image, we see a young Adelie penguin alongside its parents. The black and white composition adds depth to their surroundings while emphasizing the stark beauty of Antarctica's icy landscape. It is evident that Shackleton had a keen eye for detail as he captured this tender moment between these fascinating creatures. Shackleton's contributions extended beyond exploration; he also climbed Mount Erebus, an active volcano in Antarctica. His dedication and accomplishments were recognized by King Edward VII when he was knighted for his achievements during these expeditions. Tragically, Shackleton met his untimely demise during his final oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition at just 47 years old. However, through photographs like this one found in "The Heart of the Antarctic" we can still appreciate his indomitable spirit and unwavering passion for discovery.
