EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th-century print from the Liszt Collection showcases a mesmerizing Horizontal Panel Design featuring a Male Figure Putto Snake Interspersed. Created in the Italian Venetian style, possibly by the renowned artist Polifilo Giancarli, this artwork exudes elegance and intricacy. The design is executed with pen, brown ink, and leadpoint on a sheet measuring 7 3/16 x 10 3/8 inches (18.2 x 26.4 cm). It depicts a horizontal panel adorned with meandering rinceau motifs on the left side, while a large acanthus scroll dominates the lower body of the figure. The snake intertwines itself amidst these elaborate designs, adding an element of mystery to the composition. Intriguingly, the male figure putto morphs into various forms within this intricate tapestry of lines and curves. On one side, he is blowing a long horn - perhaps symbolizing communication or heralding something significant. The anonymous artist skillfully captures every minute detail in this exquisite piece that dates back to around 1600-1625. Though its original purpose remains unknown, it stands as a testament to both artistic mastery and historical significance.
