EDITORS COMMENTS
Alonso Pérez de Guzmán y Zúñiga, the 7th Duke of Medina Sidonia (1550-1615), was a prominent figure in the Spanish Golden Age. Born into the powerful House of Medina Sidonia, he held the title of Grandee of Spain and was a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece since 1581. This engraving, in vibrant colors, showcases the duke's distinguished appearance and regal bearing. Medina Sidonia's military career began in earnest when he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Spanish Armada in 1588. This position placed him at the helm of the largest naval force ever assembled by Spain, with the objective of defeating the English fleet led by Sir Francis Drake. The ensuing Battle of Gravelines, also known as the Battle of the Spanish Armada, ended in a costly defeat for Spain. Despite this setback, Medina Sidonia's reputation as a capable military leader remained unscathed. The intricately detailed engraving captures the duke's stern expression and the richness of his attire, reflecting his noble status. The vibrant colors used in the print further emphasize the grandeur and opulence of the period. The image serves as a testament to the power and influence of the Duke of Medina Sidonia during the 17th century, a time when Spain was a major European power. This engraving, with its rich historical significance and captivating visual appeal, is a valuable addition to any collection focusing on Spanish history, European nobility, or military history.
