In this haunting image from the heroic age of Antarctic exploration, we witness the tragic moment when Captain Lawrence Oates (1880-1912) leaves Captain Robert Falcon Scott's tent during a blizzard on their return journey from the South Pole in 1912. The young and experienced Captain Oates, a veteran of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, made this fateful decision with the hope that his comrades might survive without his burden.
