EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the tense atmosphere on Red Sunday, January 28, 1905, as a cordon of Russian troops stands guard outside the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. The scene unfolds before the arrival of an estimated 300 workers, led by Father Gapon, who were peacefully marching to present a petition to Czar Nicholas II regarding their grievances over poor working conditions and low wages. The tranquil protest would soon turn into a bloody confrontation, as troops opened fire on the unarmed demonstrators, resulting in over 100 fatalities. This pivotal moment in Russian history marked the beginning of the Russian Revolution, which would culminate in the overthrow of the monarchy in 1917. The haunting image of soldiers standing at the ready, their faces obscured by their fur hats and coats, serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic events that transpired on that fateful day.
