EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 998 from the John Reeves Collection of Botanical Drawings from Canton, China, housed in the Botany Library at the Natural History Museum in London, presents a captivating illustration of Cymbopogon citratus, commonly known as lemon grass. This exquisite drawing, created in the 19th century, offers a detailed and accurate representation of the plant that was a prized acquisition for botanical collections during the European exploration and trade era in Asia. Cymbopogon citratus is a flowering plant belonging to the grass family (Poaceae), specifically the subfamily Commelinidae and the tribe Eriantheae. It is native to tropical regions of Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, and China. The plant is characterized by its tall, slender stalks, which can grow up to 1.5 meters in height, and its long, narrow leaves that emit a lemony scent when bruised. The botanical illustration reveals the intricacies of the plant's anatomy, showcasing its inflorescence, which consists of small, white flowers arranged in a dense, cylindrical spike. The plant is monocotyledonous, meaning it has only one seed leaf, and is classified as an eudicot, angiospermae, and magnoliophyta, reflecting its complex evolutionary history. John Reeves (1774-1856), the English botanist and collector, created this drawing while working as a superintendent of the British factory in Canton, China, between 1812 and 1831. Reeves was a prolific botanical artist, producing over 1,500 drawings during his time in China, many of which were of economic importance to the British East India Company. This drawing of Cymbopogon citratus is a testament to his skill and dedication to documenting the diverse flora of Asia during a time of significant global exploration and discovery.
