EDITORS COMMENTS
The Daughters of Babylon," a theatrical masterpiece by Wilson Barrett and Robert Hichens, premiered at the Lyric Theatre on February 6, 1897, and this image of Ishtar, the enigmatic and renowned Strange Woman of Babylon, is a testament to the artistic brilliance of the production. The exquisite print, created by the talented hand of John Hassall in 1898, showcases the Eastern atmosphere with its still and balmy air. The figure of Ishtar, dressed in a long, red, floaty gown adorned with intricate necklaces and flowers, is both luscious and imposing, exuding a sense of feeling and repose. The color palette is delightful and sympathetic, with the rich reds and blossoms harmoniously contrasting against the wooden carving in the background. The image, as described in The Poster June 1898 Vol. 1 no. 1, p. 21, is a stunning representation of Hassall's work and captures the essence of the late 19th century production. The young women in the image, with their long hair adorned with flowers, add to the overall Eastern aesthetic, making this a truly mesmerizing work of art from the 1890s.
