EDITORS COMMENTS
The Field of Prestonpans: A Commemoration of the 2nd Jacobite Rebellion's Decisive Battle This vibrant and detailed lithograph, titled "The Field of Prestonpans," is an enduring testament to one of the most pivotal moments in Scottish and British history. Created by the French artist Mouilleron, under the supervision of Sir William Allan, and expertly printed by Lemercier, this coloured lithograph was published by E. Gambert and Company in London on September 1, 1852. The image captures the aftermath of the Battle of Prestonpans, which took place on September 21, 1745, during the 2nd Jacobite Rebellion. The rebellion, led by Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, aimed to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British throne. The battle, which took place in Prestonpans, East Lothian, Scotland, saw the Jacobite army, significantly outnumbered and outgunned by the British forces, achieve a remarkable victory. The lithograph vividly depicts the scene on the battlefield, with the Jacobite forces, led by their charismatic leader, standing tall and triumphant amidst the chaos and destruction of battle. The defeated British army, disorganized and demoralized, retreats in the background. The landscape is dotted with the remnants of the battle – fallen trees, scattered weapons, and the discarded regalia of war. The Field of Prestonpans is not only a visual representation of a pivotal moment in history but also a symbol of the enduring spirit and resilience of the Scottish people. The image serves as a reminder of the courage and determination that defined the Jacobite cause and continues to inspire generations of Scots and history enthusiasts alike.
