The official narrative for this drawing reads: When he saw the enemy had practically surrounded his command, he collected his platoon and prepared to fight his way back to the supporting line. To hell with surrender! he replied, and, shooting the foremost of the enemy, he finally repelled this advance with his platoon. He then fought his way back to the supporting line of the forward position, where he held out till dusk. Buchan during the intense fighting of the Battle of 1918. The official narrative accompanying this drawing tells the story of a moment when Buchan's command was surrounded by the enemy, leaving them with few options. Undeterred, Buchan rallied his platoon and prepared to fight their way back to the supporting line. As the enemy closed in, they taunted Buchan and his men with shouts of "Surrender!" But Buchan's response was unequivocal: "To hell with surrender!" With unwavering determination, he shot the foremost enemy soldier and led his platoon in repelling the advance.
