EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases a masterpiece sculpture created by the renowned Danish artist Hernan Wilhelm Bissen (1798-1868). The sculpture, titled "Margaret I of Denmark with her Consorts Philippa of England and Dagmar of Bohemia," was completed in 1856 and is now proudly displayed at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark. Margaret I of Denmark, depicted on the left, was the first queen regnant of Denmark, ruling from 1375 to 1412. She is shown here in regal attire, crowned and wearing the Danish royal insignia. To her right stands Philippa of England (1394-1430), Margaret's consort and the mother of her successor, King Eric of Pomerania. Philippa is also crowned and dressed in the style of the English court. On the far right, Dagmar of Bohemia (1186-1212) is depicted as a young, elegant figure. Dagmar was the daughter of King Vaclav II of Bohemia and was betrothed to Eric, the future King of Denmark, but the marriage was never consummated as Eric died before reaching Denmark. Dagmar is often referred to as Saint Dagmar and is the patron saint of Denmark. Bissen's sculpture captures the essence of the 13th and 14th centuries, showcasing the rich history and cultural influences of the Danish, English, and Bohemian courts during the Middle Ages. The intricate details of the figures' clothing, the delicate expressions on their faces, and the overall sense of harmony and balance make this sculpture a true masterpiece of European art.
