EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting print depicts an intimate moment in the history of the House of Bourbon, as King Louis XIII of France, the monarch of France from 1610 to 1643, engages in a heartfelt interview with his mother, Marie de Medici, in the Castle of Coursilles, France, around the year 1615. The image, an exquisite engraving by the skilled artist Dupre, was published by Ediciones Populares in 1851 as part of their Biblioteca Universal collection. Louis XIII, who ascended to the throne at the tender age of 12 following the death of his father, Henry IV, is seen here in the prime of his manhood, dressed in the elegant attire of the Baroque era. His mother, Marie de Medici, a prominent figure in her own right as a member of the powerful Medici family of Florence, is depicted in a regal gown, her expression reflecting a deep concern for her son's well-being. The Castle of Coursilles, a magnificent architectural marvel of the 17th century, serves as the backdrop for this poignant scene. The castle, which still stands today, is located in the Navarre region of southwestern France. The intricate details of the castle's facade, as well as the lush greenery surrounding it, are beautifully rendered in this colored print. The interview between Louis XIII and Marie de Medici is an important moment in French history, as it marked a turning point in the young king's reign. Marie de Medici, who had been regent during her son's minority, was banished from France in 1617 following a power struggle with the king's favorite, Cardinal Richelieu. This interview, therefore, represents a final moment of mother and son together before their tumultuous relationship came to an end. This print is a testament to the rich history and artistry of the European Baroque period, and serves as a reminder of the complexities of monarchy and family dynamics during this fascinating era.
