EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken between 1879 and 1881, we find George De Long, a prominent American explorer, standing before his ship, the Jeanette, against the backdrop of the Midnight Sun at Lake Daly in the Arctic. De Long's groundbreaking expedition aimed to explore the uncharted waters of the Arctic Ocean and prove that the movement of Arctic sea ice was influenced by ocean currents. De Long's journey began in 1878 when he set sail from San Francisco with a crew of 32 men aboard the Jeanette. However, the ship became trapped in the ice near Wrangel Island in the Russian Arctic and was eventually crushed and sunk in 1879. The crew was stranded but managed to survive by building a camp at Lake Daly, where they spent the winter. Despite the harsh conditions, De Long and his men conducted extensive scientific research, collecting valuable data on the Arctic environment and its geology, meteorology, and zoology. They also made several important discoveries, including the presence of a large underwater reef near the camp. This photograph captures the moment of respite and reflection amidst the vast, icy wilderness. The Midnight Sun casts a golden glow over the scene, illuminating the camp and the surrounding landscape. De Long stands proudly before the Jeanette, a testament to human perseverance and the spirit of exploration. De Long's expedition proved that Arctic sea ice was indeed moved by ocean currents, a significant contribution to the scientific understanding of the Arctic region. His discoveries paved the way for future explorations and expanded the world's knowledge of the polar regions. This photograph serves as a reminder of the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to exploring the unknown and pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.
