EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Mac Nicol, a proud representative of the Scottish Highland Clans, donning traditional attire in a portrait from the early 20th century. The image is taken from "The Highland Clans of Scotland Vol. 2," published in 1923 by an unknown photographer, and is now available as a rights-managed print from Mary Evans Prints Online. Mac Nicol's costume reflects the rich history and heritage of the Scottish Highlands. The tartan plaid, a distinctive pattern unique to each Highland clan, is worn draped over a white linen shirt and a woolen tunic. A belt, or sgian-dubh, is worn around his waist, with a small knife concealed within. A sporran, a pouch made of leather or fur, hangs from the belt, and a kilt, pleated and secured with a leather strap, covers his legs. The intricacy of Mac Nicol's costume extends to his accessories. He wears a brooch, or badge, on his left shoulder, representing his clan's crest. A silver collar, or torc, encircles his neck, and a pair of silver bracelets adorn his wrists. His feet are covered in hose, or socks, and ghillie brogues, traditional Scottish shoes with laces that extend up the legs. Mac Nicol's expression conveys a sense of pride and connection to his Scottish heritage. The photograph serves as a reminder of the rich history and traditions of the Scottish Highland Clans, which continue to be celebrated and preserved to this day.
