EDITORS COMMENTS
A poignant moment of remembrance unfolds at St. Peter's Church, Eaton Square, as family, friends, and distinguished guests gather to pay their respects to Captain Francis Grenfell, V.C., and his twin brother Captain Riversdale ("Rivy") Grenfell, V.C. The Grenfell brothers, two of fifteen siblings, served with great distinction in the 9th Lancers during the First World War. Their exceptional military careers were not their only claims to fame; they were also accomplished polo players and well-known figures in high society. Francis Grenfell was the first officer to be awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) of the war, an honor bestowed upon him for his gallantry in action against unbroken infantry at Andregnies, Belgium, on August 24, 1914. Additionally, he displayed gallant conduct in assisting to save the guns of the 119th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, near Doubon the same day. Tragically, Francis was killed in action on May 24, 1915, and now rests in the Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery. Rivy Grenfell met his end during the Battle of the Aisne on September 14, 1914. The memorial service, held in 1915, was attended by a distinguished gathering, including Sir Winston Churchill, the Hon. Neil Primrose, Arthur Balfour, Lord Charles Beresford, Field-Marshal Lord Grenfell, and Colonel Glyn. These individuals came together to honor the lives and sacrifices of the brave Grenfell brothers, whose legacy continues to inspire and remind us of the courage and valor displayed by so many during the First World War.
