EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print depicts the Declaration of Guy Fawkes, also known as the Confession or Deposition of Guy Fawkes, signed on the 17th of November, 1605. Guy Fawkes, an English Catholic, is infamous for his role in the Gunpowder Plot, a failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and his government. The plot was intended to take place on the opening of Parliament on the fifth of November, 1605, with the explosion of gunpowder stored beneath the House of Lords. The document in this print is a record of Guy Fawkes' confession, detailing his involvement in the plot and his reasons for participating. Fawkes was captured along with several other conspirators on the night before the planned attack, and was subjected to torture in order to extract a confession. The text of the document is written in Old English script, with Fawkes' signature appearing at the bottom. The Declaration of Guy Fawkes is an important historical document, providing insight into the motivations and actions of those involved in the Gunpowder Plot. It is also a significant symbol of the political tensions and religious conflicts that existed in England during the early 17th century. The document is part of the State Papers Domestic series, held at the National Archives in Kew, London, and is a valuable resource for scholars and historians studying this period of English history.
