EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1919, Clare Consuelo Sheridan, an English sculptress, traveller, and writer, is seen posing with her young son, Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Clare, born as Clare Consuelo Frewen, was the widow of the late Captain Wilfred Sheridan and a great-great granddaughter of the renowned playwright, Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Clare's artistic talents extended beyond the written word, as she was also an accomplished sculptor. Her sculpture of Princess Patricia of Connaught, an inset image in the photograph, showcases her exceptional skill. Princess Patricia, the youngest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, was a prominent figure in British society during this time. Clare's multifaceted career as a sculptress, traveller, and writer made her a fascinating and intriguing figure in early 20th-century society. Her adventures and artistic pursuits took her far and wide, and her works continue to be admired and celebrated today. The photograph, published in The Tatler, captures the essence of Clare's vibrant personality and her deep bond with her son. Richard, who would go on to have a successful career in the British Army, is seen here as a young boy, gazing intently at his mother with a look of admiration and love. This photograph is a testament to Clare's remarkable achievements and her enduring legacy as a trailblazing artist, traveler, and writer. It offers a glimpse into the life of a woman who defied conventions and made her mark on the world through her creativity and adventurous spirit.
