EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph from The Bystander, published on the 18th of April, 1928, showcases an article titled "Flying for Women," featuring three pioneering female aviators of the era. At the top left, Lady Abe Bailey (nee Mary Westenra, 1890-1960) is prominently displayed as the champion woman aviator, proudly posing next to her D.H. Moth aircraft. Lady Bailey, an Irish aviator, made history as one of the first women to earn a pilot's license in Britain and set numerous records for long-distance flights. Joining Lady Bailey in this photograph are Lady Heath and Ruth Elder. Lady Heath, also known as Amy Johnson, was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia in 1930. Ruth Elder, an American aviator, was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean from east to west in 1931. The 1920s were a time of great innovation and progress for aviation, and these women, along with many others, broke barriers and defied societal norms to prove that women were just as capable as men in the cockpit. This photograph is a testament to their groundbreaking achievements and their enduring legacy in the history of flight.
