EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Antonio Verico in 1845 after a portrait by Juan de Juanes, showcases a powerful and regal image of King Alfonso V of Aragon from the 15th century. The portrait depicts Alfonso, dressed in full armor, seated triumphantly on a throne wagon drawn by four horses. The scene commemorates his victorious entry into Naples following the successful siege of the city in 1442. King Alfonso V (1420-1458), also known as Alfonso the Magnanimous, was a monarch of the Crown of Aragon, which included Aragon, Valencia, and Sicily. His reign was marked by military conquests and diplomatic alliances. In 1442, he led his army to Naples, which was then ruled by Alfonso I of Naples, and after a long and arduous siege, the city finally surrendered. The engraving also features an intriguing background, with the view of the triumphal entry into Naples. The detailed armor and the proud expression on Alfonso's face convey his strength and determination as a leader. The image is taken from "Il Costume Antico e Moderno," a comprehensive work on ancient and modern costumes of the peoples of the world, published in Florence. Interestingly, this engraving bears a connection to the Italian military captain, Francesco Ferrucci, who was born in Volterra, Tuscany, around 1529. Ferrucci gained fame during the Italian Wars, leading the Florentine army against the Spanish forces in 1530. In one of the battles, Ferrucci was captured by the Spanish commander, Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba, and was later executed in 1540. The term "costringe," which is present in the title of the work, means "to constrain" or "to bind," possibly hinting at the eventual fate of Ferrucci. This historical image not only showcases the grandeur of the 15th-century monarchy but also offers a glimpse into the intriguing world of medieval warfare and the fashion of the time.
