EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy), we find a powerful and imposing portrait of Roman Emperor Maximinus II, also known as Gaius Valerius Galerius Maximinus Daia or Maximinus Daza. Maximinus II ruled the Roman Empire from 308 to 313 AD, following the reigns of Maxentius and Constantine the Great. Maximinus II is depicted wearing the traditional Roman military attire, including a helmet adorned with the image of Helios, the sun god, and a cloak fastened with a brooch. He holds a spear and a lance in his hands, symbols of his military prowess and readiness for battle. The emperor's intense gaze and strong jawline convey a sense of determination and leadership. The portrait is reminiscent of other Roman imperial portraits, such as those of Marcus Aurelius, Valerius Augustus, and other Caesars and Kaisers. However, Maximinus II's distinctive features, including his thick beard and pronounced nose, make this portrait a unique representation of his likeness. This engraving, produced in Utrecht in the late 17th century, is a testament to the enduring fascination with the Roman Empire and its leaders. It offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to connect with the history and culture of ancient Rome. The intricate details of the copperplate engraving bring the portrait to life, making it a valuable historical artifact and an essential addition to any collection of classical art or Roman history.
