EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, created by Pietro Ruga after an illustration by Lorenzo Rocceggiani, offers a fascinating glimpse into the religious practices and iconic attire of ancient civilizations. The image showcases various religious caps and instruments from the ancient Egyptians, Etruscans, Greeks, and Romans. At the center, an Apex, also known as an Apoz or Pope's mitre, is depicted on the bas-relief of Capitol 1. This tall, conical hat was worn by the high priests of Jupiter in ancient Rome. Nearby, the cap of a high priest of Jupiter the Thunderer from the Temple of Jupiter is displayed. Three religious caps used by the Flamen priests of Bacchus are also illustrated. These caps, unique to the Flamen priests, were worn during their rituals dedicated to the god of wine and fertility. A variety of knives, axes, and other instruments used for sacrificing victims are depicted, including a ladle and a knife with a lamb's leg handle, which is an Aspergillum. This religious instrument was used to sprinkle holy water during rituals. The horsehair attached to the ladle was believed to purify the water and imbue it with divine power. This engraving is an essential resource for scholars, historians, and anyone interested in the religious practices and symbolism of ancient civilizations. The intricate details and accurate depictions of these artifacts offer valuable insights into the rich history and cultural traditions of the past.
