EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts the uniform of a Marine of the Guard, Marin de la Garde, from the Napoleonic era. The Marine is shown in a smart and imposing pose, standing at attention with his musket slung over his shoulder and sabre at his side. The intricacy of his uniform is on full display, with its numerous buttons, epaulettes, and frogging. The Marin de la Garde were an elite unit of the French Navy, responsible for providing a land-based presence for the navy and serving as the personal bodyguard for the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Their uniforms were designed to reflect their status and military prowess. The Marin de la Garde wore a distinctive blue and white uniform with red lapels and cuffs, adorned with gold braid and buttons. The epaulettes on their shoulders displayed the fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the French monarchy. The frogging, or rows of buttons running down the front of the jacket, added a decorative touch while also serving a practical purpose, allowing the jacket to be easily buttoned and unbuttoned. This lithograph is from Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix's Costumes Historiques de la France, published in Paris in 1852. The detailed and accurate depiction of the Marine's uniform makes this a valuable historical record of military fashion from the Napoleonic era.
