EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the early 1910s, we witness a scene of daily life at the Lipton Tea Plantation in Bunyan Estate, Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon). The lush, verdant hills of the estate are dotted with tea pickers, their brightly colored saris contrasting against the backdrop of the rolling terrain. Each picker holds a woven basket, carefully filling it with plucked tea leaves, which will later be processed into the renowned Lipton Tea. The Lipton Tea Company, founded by Thomas Lipton in Scotland in 1890, had established a significant presence in Sri Lanka by the early 1900s. The Bunyan Estate, located in the central highlands, was one of their largest and most productive plantations. The estate's name, Bunyan, is a nod to the famous English author John Bunyan, whose works, such as "Pilgrim's Progress," were popular in Scotland at the time. The pickers in this photograph are likely Tamil or Sinhalese women, who were employed as laborers on the plantation. Their work was essential to the production of Lipton Tea, which was known for its high quality and distinctive label. The logo, featuring a red and gold shield with the words "Lipton Tea" and an image of a tea leaf, would soon become a familiar sight in households around the world. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the dedication and hard work of the tea pickers who contributed to the success of the Lipton Tea Company. Their labor, combined with the unique terroir of the Bunyan Estate, resulted in the exceptional tea that continues to be enjoyed today.
