EDITORS COMMENTS
This elegant oval portrait captures the striking beauty and regal presence of Princess Augusta Frederica of Great Britain (1737-1813), the granddaughter of King George II and elder sibling of George III. Born into the British royal family, Augusta was also a member of the House of Brunswick through her mother, Princess Anne of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. In 1764, she married Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, becoming Duchess of Brunswick. The portrait, believed to have been painted circa 1785, showcases Augusta's refined elegance and sophistication. She is depicted wearing a high-waisted robe adorned with intricate floral patterns, accessorized with a delicate bonnet and a string of pearls. Her expressive eyes and poised posture exude confidence and grace. Augusta's marriage to Duke Ferdinand was a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening the ties between the British and Brunswickian monarchies. The union produced several children, including their eldest daughter, Caroline of Brunswick, who later became the wife of the future King George IV. As a member of both the British and Brunswickian royal families, Princess Augusta Frederica played an essential role in the diplomatic and political landscape of Europe during the late 18th century. Her legacy continues to be celebrated as a symbol of royal lineage and familial connections that transcended national borders.
