EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative 15th-century print, the Duke of Buckingham, Thomas FitzAlan (1443-1487), is depicted on horseback, leading his troops towards the River Severn as he prepares to confront King Richard III during the autumn of 1483. The historical context of this scene is the aftermath of the Battle of Bosworth Field, where the Lancaster forces, led by Henry Tudor, had defeated King Richard III, who had usurped the throne from the rightful heir, Edward V, and his brother, the Duke of York. Buckingham, who had initially supported Richard III, had switched allegiances and joined forces with Henry Tudor after the revelation of Richard's treacherous actions against the young princes. With the Lancaster forces advancing towards London, Richard III sought to rally his remaining supporters and march on the capital to maintain his grip on the throne. Buckingham, however, was determined to intercept him and prevent further bloodshed. The print shows Buckingham and his men approaching the River Severn, which was then a significant barrier to land travel. The turbulent waters, swollen with autumn rains, make the crossing treacherous, and the Duke is shown carefully assessing the situation, likely considering his options for crossing or finding an alternative route. The print captures the uncertainty and tension of this pivotal moment in British history, as the outcome of the conflict between Richard III and Henry Tudor hung in the balance. The Duke of Buckingham's journey to the River Severn marked a turning point in the Wars of the Roses, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Tudor dynasty and the end of the Plantagenet line. This print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the tumultuous events of October 1483 and the dramatic struggle for the English throne.
