This powerful image captures the pivotal moment during the French Revolution when the Gardes Francaises, a regiment of the Paris militia, refused to fire on the unarmed crowd in the Place de la Bastille on June 30, 1789. The Gardes Francaises, who were under the command of the Marquis de Launay, were ordered to quell the growing rebellion that had begun on July 14 with the storming of the Bastille.
