EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "Bombax (Eriodendrion anfractuosum)" is a stunning depiction of the Bombax tree, native to the tropical regions of Central Africa, as it appeared in the late 19th century. The image is taken from "El Congo y la Creacion del Estado Independiente de este nombre. Historia de los Trabajos y Exploraciones Verificados" (The Congo and the Founding of its Free State. A Story of Work and Exploration), a book edited in Barcelona around 1890. The work was edited during the height of European exploration and colonization of Africa, and the inclusion of this image in the publication underscores the fascination Europeans held for the unique flora and fauna of the African continent. The Bombax tree, also known as the Silk-cotton tree or the African Redwood, is a prominent feature of the tropical vegetation in Central Africa. Its distinctive trunk, with its twisted and gnarled appearance, is on full display in this engraving. The tree is named for the silky hairs that cover the seeds, which resemble cotton. The Bombax tree is also significant in African folklore and traditional medicine, with various parts of the tree used for medicinal purposes. Henry Morton Stanley, the famous American journalist and explorer, is credited with the discovery of the Bombax tree in Central Africa during his expedition in the late 1870s. Stanley's exploration of the Congo Basin and his encounter with the legendary African explorer David Livingstone helped fuel European interest in the region and paved the way for further exploration and colonization. This engraving serves as a reminder of the rich history of exploration and discovery that shaped the modern world, as well as the unique natural wonders that continue to inspire awe and wonder.
