EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking oil painting captures the distinguished visage of Professor Sir William Harrison Moore, an Australian legal scholar and academic who made a significant impact on the University of Melbourne during the early 20th century. Circa 1922, this portrait depicts Professor Moore in formal attire, seated with an air of authority and wisdom. His students, including future Prime Minister of Australia, Robert Menzies, were drawn to his intellectual prowess and charisma. Born in 1864, Moore began his academic career in England before emigrating to Australia in 1891. He held various positions at the University of Melbourne, ultimately becoming the first Professor of Jurisprudence and International Law in 1912. In 1923, he was awarded the prestigious Archibald Prize for this very portrait, painted by renowned Australian artist, John Longstaff. Moore's influence extended beyond the classroom. He was a founding member of the Melbourne branch of the Australian Institute of International Affairs and played a key role in the establishment of the Australian Journal of International Law. His expertise in international law was sought after by the Australian government, and he served as a legal advisor during the negotiations for the Statute of Westminster in 1931. Robert Menzies, who studied under Moore in the late 1910s and early 1920s, would go on to become one of Australia's most influential political figures. He served as Prime Minister from 1949 to 1966 and is remembered for his significant contributions to Australian politics and diplomacy. This portrait of Professor Moore serves as a testament to the profound impact he had on his students and the broader Australian community.
