EDITORS COMMENTS
Former President Paul Kruger (1825-1904) and his late second wife Gezina (nee du Plessis) (1847-1901) in this poignant photograph taken circa 1907 at their gravesite in Pretoria, South Africa. Paul Kruger, a prominent Boer leader, served as the President of the South African Republic, also known as the Transvaal Republic, from 1883 to 1900. Kruger is best known for his role in the Second Boer War (1899-1902) against the British. Gezina, the daughter of a prominent Dutch Reformed Church minister, married Kruger in 1874. Their union produced six children. After Kruger's defeat in the war and subsequent exile, Gezina remained in South Africa and passed away in 1901. Kruger returned to South Africa in 1902 and was granted amnesty. He died in Pretoria in 1904 and was buried next to his beloved wife. This image captures the enduring love story of the Boer leader and his devoted spouse, their graves a testament to their legacy in South African history.
